The 2020 Tokyo Olympics have officially been rescheduled, and will run from late July to early August of 2021.
The 2020 Tokyo Olympics have officially been rescheduled.
The games were delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic last week, and the new dates were announced this morning. The games will now take place from July 23 - August 8th, 2021 with the closing ceremony taking place on August 9. Tokyo organizing committee president Yoshiro Mori said a spring Olympics was considered, but postponed qualifiers and the active schedules of other sports leagues made summer a better fit.
The postponement is the first in Olympic history, though there were multiple cancellations due to ongoing wars in the past, including the 1940 games, which were also slated to take place in Tokyo. The new dates for the games are almost exactly a year later than originally planned, with the original dates scheduled for July 24 - Aug. 9.
In addition, the Paralympic Games have also been rescheduled. They will run from August 24 - September 5, 2021.
