Spruce Grove pads division lead
The Spruce Grove Saints find themselves in sole possession of first place in the AJHL North Division, after wins over Bonnyville and the Calgary Canucks this past weekend.
Friday night, the Saints found themselves down 2-0 early in the second period, after the Pontiacs got goals from Grayson Constable and Ty Enns.
But Tanner Hickey got the Saints back within a goal on the powerplay, making it 2-1 after 40.
In the third, rookie defenceman Cameron Chin tied the game with this first AJHL goal, while forward Cam Mitchell scored the winner with just over two minutes to play.
Sunday afternoon, the Saints fell behind 21 seconds in, when Cameron Pollock-Hughes gave Calgary a 1-0 lead.
But the Saints stormed back with six unanswered goals - two in each period - and were led by a hat trick from veteran Nick Leyer.
Rookie Bruce MacGregor picked up three assists, while goaltender Braeden Stephen won his first start of the season in goal.
Up next for Spruce Grove, a return trip to Bonnyville on Wednesday, before visits from Fort McMurray on Friday and Drayton Valley on Sunday.
