Saints sweep Thunder in weekend doubleheader

Saints open regular season with wins

Just like earlier in this year's preseason, the Spruce Grove Saints got the better of the Drayton Valley Thunder in back-to-back games over the weekend.

On Friday night, the Saints skated away with a 3-2 shootout win at Grant Fuhr Arena, thanks to two third period goals from veteran forward Cam Mitchell.

Ryan Peckford added the lone goal in the shootout, while goaltender Matt Davis stopped 25 shots for the win.

On Saturday, Peckford added two goals in regulation, then set up Seth Fyten for the third period winner, as the Saints picked up another 3-2 victory.

Davis needed 20 saves to grab the win, while Fyten also finished with three points.

The Saints open the week on the road in Lloydminster on Wednesday night, before returning to Spruce Grove on the weekend for visits from Fort McMurray and Whitecourt.
