1-0 win sends Saints back to North Final
The Spruce Grove Saints are headed back to the North Final.
Spruce Grove shut out Bonnyville 1-0 last night, eliminating the Pontiacs in four straight games.
Head Coach Bram Stephen reflected on how challenging the third period was, with his team up by only one goal.
"Bonnyville's push in third was real strong, you could see it as soon as they got on the ice before the third period even started, there was a lot of jump in their step, and they left everything out there, as they should. Our guys hung in there - it wasn't pretty in the third, but we got 'er done," he said.
"It was nice to finish it off as quick as we did, get some rest now, some practice time - that's something that's really needed in our room right now."
Nick Leyer had the only goal of the night, while goaltender Matt Davis made 19 saves for his second shutout of the playoffs.
Stephen says getting blown out by Bonnyville on home ice back in February ended up being a turning point for his team.Stephen says getting blown out by Bonnyville on home ice back in February ended up being a turning point for his team.
"We got spanked by them pretty good in February 8-1, I think that was the third game in a row we lost to them. And then the margin started getting closer and closer, and started tilting in our favour. So as we saw that happen, I think our guys grew a lot of belief in our room here."
The team is now off until March 29, when they'll open up a new series with either Sherwood Park or Fort McMurray.
