Saints stay undefeated on home ice

Weekend wins vs Fort McMurray, Drayton Valley

The Spruce Grove Saints have yet to lose a game inside the Grant Fuhr Arena this season.

Friday night, the Saints trailed the Fort McMurray Oil Barons twice in the game, and went into the third down 2-1.

But a highlight reel tying goal from Cam Mitchell, and a winner from rookie Alex Dalton led the Saints to the 3-2 comeback victory.

On Sunday afternoon, the Saints overcame a scoreless first to score five unanswered goals in a 5-0 win over the Drayton Valley Thunder.

Forward Nick Leyer led the way for the Saints with two goals and an assist – he’s got five goals and six points over his last three games.

Defenceman Cory Babichuk also added two goals of his own, while Brett Trentham picked up one goal and a couple helpers.

The win was also the first shutout of goaltender Matthew Davis’s AJHL career.

The 17-year-old stopped 20 shots, and knocked down his goals against average to 1.26 – only Ashton Abel of the Calgary Mustangs has a better GAA than that, and he’s started two fewer games.

The Saints get a week off to prepare for next weekend’s opponent – the Sherwood Park Crusaders.

The two teams meet in Spruce Grove on Friday night, before a rematch in Sherwood Park on Saturday.

Saturday's game is the Game of the Week on The One, with the pregame show at 6:40 followed by puck drop at 7:00.
