Visiting teams control weekend doubleheader
The Spruce Grove Saints and Sherwood Park Crusaders each gave the other two points this past weekend.
Friday night in Spruce Grove, the Saints led 3-1 after the first period, thanks to goals from Logan Ganie, Brett Trentham, and the first of Jaxen Wyatt's AJHL career.
But the Cru clawed back over the final 40 minutes, as Brayden Hyland brought them back within one in the second period, to take a 3-2 deficit into the third.
Garrett Clegg had two goals in the final frame, including the winner with three minutes left to play, to give Sherwood Park a come-from-behind 4-3 win.
Matt Berlin made 30 saves in the win, while Braeden Stephen took the loss for the Saints.
Saturday, the Saints struck on the powerplay, when Nick Leyer knocked home a loose puck for a 1-0 lead.
After a back-and-forth second with offence to show for it, Parker Saretsky snapped a four-game pointless streak with his seventh goal of the season in the third, eventually giving the Saints a 2-0 win.
Berlin made another 29 saves in a tough loss, while Matthew Davis recorded his second shutout in as many starts with the victory.
Up next, the Saints are back with a midweek game in Whitecourt on Tuesday night.
