Saints split weekend road swing

Team back in Spruce Grove vs Olds on Friday

The Spruce Grove Saints split a weekend road trip in northern Alberta, coming up with a win in Grande Prairie Friday night, and a loss in Whitecourt on Saturday.

Friday night, the Saints had a three goal outburst in the first period, thanks to Stanley Cooley, Cam Mitchell, and TJ Lloyd.

After the Storm cut the lead to two through 40 minutes, Spruce Grove iced the win with a couple of third period tallies.

Rookie affiliate forward Graham Gamache scored his first AJHL goal, after getting called up from his Knights of Columbus Pats Midget team for the game.

After a shorthanded goal from Grande Prairie, Mitchell’s second of the night also came with Spruce Grove down a man, to cement the 5-2 win.

Matthew Davis made 21 saves in goal for his tenth win of the season.

Saturday night, the scoring didn’t come so easy.

Brett Trentham got the Saints on the board just over two minutes into the game, for a 1-0 lead that would last all the way until the midway point of the third period.

But Tommy Cardinal’s tying goal was followed by a winner from Jaedon Leslie with less than two minutes to play, as the Wolverines snapped the Saints winning streak at five games.

Up next for the Saints, another week’s worth of practice before a visit from the Olds Grizzlys on Friday night.

They’ll follow that up with a return to Sherwood Park on Saturday.
