Saints split weekend against Thunder, Barons

Overtime win over Drayton Valley followed by loss to Fort McMurray

The Spruce Grove Saints are finishing a weekend that saw an overtime win over Drayton Valley on Friday, followed by a loss to the Oil Barons in Fort McMurray on Saturday night.

Friday, the Saints took a 1-0 lead into the third period, thanks to Cole Basnett's first goal in a Spruce Grove uniform.

But two quick ones from Matthew Kinash and Jacob Charko suddenly gave the Thunder a lead in the game, which they held until the midway point of the period.

A tying goal from Jordan Biro took the Saints to overtime, where Biro won it on a beautiful solo rush, at the 1:56 mark of the extra frame.

On Saturday, Spruce Grove was treated to an end to end beauty from Tanner Hickey in the second period, though the Saints trailed 3-1 in the third period.

Basnett scored his second goal and third point in three games since joining the Saints in the final five minutes to get close, but the Barons would hang on for the win.

That moves Fort McMurray to within 7 points of the Saints, after a loss to Drumheller Friday night.

The Saints now prepare for a midweek matchup with the Sherwood Park Crusaders on Wednesday night.

It’s the first meeting between the two teams since back on November 10, when the Saints were beaten in a shootout in Sherwood Park.

This week will see the Saints work through a shorthanded lineup as well.

TJ Lloyd, Tanner Hickey, Parker Saretsky, and Matthew Davis are all down in Calgary at the Team Canada West selection camp, along with a mounting list of injuries.

Puck drop Wednesday night is at 7, with the pregame show on the One kicking off at 6:40.
