Saints split two-game weekend series with Fort McMurray

Nick Leyer scored three goals on the weekend for the Saints as they split their weekend series with the Fort McMurray Oil Barons.

The Spruce Grove Saints' weekend series against Fort McMurray ended in a split with each team winning one game.

The weekend started with the Saints taking the first game Friday night by a score of 4-1. Cameron Chin scored and added two assists, and Nick Leyer scored twice, including an empty netter with just over a minute left. Matt Davis stopped 21 of 22 shots to improve his record to 6-1, while bringing his GAA down to 1.99, and his save percentage up to .915.

On Saturday night, the Saints fell 3-2 to the Oil Barons. Despite another goal for Leyer and one for Stanley Cooley, the Saints could not tie the game after Fort McMurray scored a powerplay goal in the third. The Oil Barons scored a powerplay goal, an even Strength goal, and a shorthanded goal in the game. Maxence Duschene allowed 3 goals on 20 shots in the matchup.

The Saints next game comes Friday night against the Whitecourt Wolverines.
