Saints split Oil Baron doubleheader

Team avenges Friday loss with convincing win

The Spruce Grove Saints are coming off a weekend split against the Oil Barons in Fort McMurray over the weekend.

Friday night, the Saints held a slim 1-0 lead after 40 minutes, thanks to a Dylan Bourlai snipe in the final minute of the second.

But the Barons tied things up in the first minute of the third, and got a powerplay goal from Brendan Stafford with just over five minutes to play, that stood up as the winner.

Saturday, the Saints actually trailed 2-1 after the first period, after goals from Stafford and Jack Hamly.

But Spruce Grove rattled off five unanswered goals over the final 40 minutes, including a four-goal second period, to win it 6-2.

Logan Ganie had two goals, while Brett Trentham added another, in their return to the lineup from injury.

Seth Fyten also found the back of the net, along with rookies Brent Schuldhaus and Matt Rempe – who was also coming back from the injured list.

Liam McCloskey needed just 14 saves to pull out the win on Saturday, while Matt Davis was peppered on Friday night in a tough luck loss.

Next up for Spruce Grove, a visit from the Whitecourt Wolverines on Wednesday.

The game is at 7:00 at Grant Fuhr Arena, and can also be heard on 88.1 The One at 6:40.
