Saints split final weekend, finish third

Playoffs to start Thursday vs Drayton Valley

The Spruce Grove Saints wrapped up their regular season this past weekend, with a win against Grande Prairie and a loss to Fort McMurray.

Friday night, the Saints led 2-1 after 40 minutes, before Grande Prairie roared back with two goals in two minutes to take a late 3-2 lead.

But Seth Fyten scored his second of the night with 1:04 left in the third to send the game to overtime.

In the extra frame, captain TJ Lloyd needed only 18 seconds to go end to end, as he tapped a rebound past Kaeden Lane for the OT win.

On Sunday, Barons defenceman Ryan Conroy scored the only goal of the afternoon in the second period.

Rookie goaltender Josh Dias made 35 saves for his first career shutout in the McMurray goal, as he outdueled Liam McCloskey in a battle of the goaltenders.

With a third-place finish locked up, the Saints now turn their attention to their first round matchup with the Drayton Valley Thunder.

Game 1 goes Thursday night in Spruce Grove, followed up by Game 2 on Friday, with puck drop at 7 pm both nights.

The series will shift to Drayton Valley for Game 3 on Sunday night, with a Game 4 to be played there on Monday if necessary.

A potential fifth and deciding game would be played a week Wednesday night back at Grant Fuhr Arena.
