Saints ride five goal second period for 6-4 win over Pontiacs

The Spruce Grove Saints have won four straight after taking down Bonnyville 6-4 last night.

The Spruce Grove Saints are winners of four straight.

Last night, they took on the Bonnyville Pontiacs on the road, and the game was not lacking for offense. In the first period, Nick Leyer got the scoring started for Spruce Grove, tallying his 23rd goal of the season 6:18 into the game. The Pontiacs tied it up on the powerplay 4:37 later after a too many men penalty against the Saints.

Heading into the second period, the Saints offense came alive. Ryan Peckford led the charge with his 25th and 26th goals 2:20 apart to start the frame. After the Pontiacs made it 3-2 with another powerplay goal, the Saints would respond with two powerplay tallies of their own. Cole Basnett got the first of them, followed by Brayden Nicholetts less than three minutes later. Peckford would finish off the Saints' offensive explosion with his third goal of the period with just under three minutes left. Nicholetts and Chayce Schmidt dropped the gloves in the period, and were both given game misconducts.

In the third period, the Saints offense took a breather, as they wouldn't score again for the rest of the game. Bonnyville would add two more goals in the frame, including a third powerplay goal, but the Saints held on for a 6-4 win. A second fight of the night broke out in the period, as Cole Basnett and Cam Newton threw them down this time. Both players were also given game misconducts as well.

With the win in net, Matt Davis collected his seventh victory in his last eight starts. For the season, he now sits with a 2.47 GAA and a .901 SV%. The Saints themselves are winners of eight of their past nine games dating back to their January 12th game against the Pontiacs.

The two teams have a rematch on Sunday in Spruce Grove.
