The Spruce Grove Saints lost their first game of the season last night, falling 5-3 to the defending champion Brooks Bandits.

The Spruce Grove Saints lost their first game of the season last night, falling 5-3 to the defending champion Brooks Bandits.

In the first game between the two teams since last year's Pipeline Cup finals, where the Bandits swept the Saints. In the game, the Saints started off strong, leading 1-0 after the first period thanks to Tanner Klassen's first goal of the season. The Bandits came out of the gate on fire in the second period, scoring four goals, including two by Jakob Lee, and three points by Randy Hernandez. Devon Phillips scored a minute and 26 seconds into the third for Brooks, and Spruce Grove would add another goal, but it was not enough.

The Saints took nine penalties in the game, leading to four Powerplay goals by Brooks. The Bandits themselves took 8 penalties, and Spruce grove went 2-8.

Spruce Grove faces off against the Calgary Mustangs tomorrow at 1:00.
