Season series ends with 9-3 drubbing
The Spruce Grove Saints delivered a smackdown to an unlikely opponent last night, hammering the first-place Sherwood Park Crusaders 9-3 on home ice.
The Saints had tied the game 1-1 in the first period, before trailing 3-1 just over five minutes into the second.
But Spruce Grove led a charge with eight unanswered goals the rest of the way, including five goals in the final seven and a half minutes of the second.
Parker Saretsky led the way for the Saints, scoring three goals and assisting on two others.
Logan Ganie added a shorthanded goal and two assists, while other goals came from TJ Lloyd, Jake Ashton, Evan Wood, Seth Fyten, and Affiliate Player Graham Gamache.
Defenceman Cory Babichuk had two assists, while forward Cam Mitchell had one helper, as each returned to the lineup after missing extended stretches due to injury.
Matthew Davis stopped 21 shots in the victory, as the Saints got back within 10 points of the division leaders.
The Saints were without forwards Stanley Cooley, Cole Basnett, and Dylan Bourlai, after all three were suspended by the AJHL after a melee in the game against the Crusaders on December 19.
All three sat out Sunday, after the Saints' game against Lloydminster was cancelled Saturday night due to poor weather.
Cooley and Basnett are eligible to return to the lineup Friday night when Okotoks visits Spruce Grove.
Bourlai's return will have to wait until January 25, when the Fort McMurray Oil Barons are in town.
Friday's game against the Oilers is a 7 pm puck drop at Grant Fuhr Arena, and can be heard live on The One.
