RBC Cup-host Bandits sweep Saints
The Spruce Grove Saints' season came to an end on Tuesday night, as the team fell 2-0 to the Brooks Bandits, who completed a sweep of the AJHL Final.
Jakob Lee scored on the powerplay in the second, before William Lemay scored into an empty net late in the third to ice the win.
The Saints had fallen behind 2-0 in the series, after back-to-back 3-2 losses in Brooks over the weekend.
In Game 1, the Saints fell behind 3-1 on a goal from Simon Gravel 50 seconds into the third period.
Logan Ganie scored 12 minutes in to make it a one-goal game, but the Bandits held on for the win despite only managing three shots on goal in the third.
Game 2 saw Spruce Grove come back from a 2-0 lead to tie it before the end of the second, thanks to goals from Seth Fyten and Tanner Hickey.
It wasn't until late in the second overtime, when Gravel buried his second of the series to send the Saints back home on a heartbreaker.
In Monday's Game 3, rookie Corson Ceulemans scored twice in the second, while Cam Mitchell had a last-second goal to make it 3-1 heading into the third.
But the Bandits got goals from Andrew Lucas and Tyler Campbell to push the game out of reach, and make it a 5-1 final.
Brooks defenceman Brandon Scanlin was honoured as the 2019 AJHL Playoff MVP following the win last night.
For Brooks, it's the team's fifth championship in the last eight seasons, and was the tenth year in a row that either the Saints or the Bandits have won the title.
The Bandits now move on to the Doyle Cup, where they'll play the BCHL champion Prince George Spruce Kings.
Both those teams automatically earn berths at the RBC Cup national championships, which will be held in Brooks.
