Spruce Grove one point back of second with two games to play
The Spruce Grove Saints picked up an eighth win in a row, beating the Pontiacs 3-1 in Bonnyville last night.
After a scoreless first period, the Saints got on the board in the second, thanks to a nice solo effort from Seth Fyten.
The second-year forward curled his way out of the right wing corner and into the slot, before backhanding one past Pontiacs goalie Colby Muise for a 1-0 lead through 40 minutes.
Fyten struck again early in the third period, when he was left wide open in front of Muise on the powerplay, and tapped in a pass to make it 2-0.
Bonnyville got back within one thanks to a powerplay goal from Garin Butler with just over 7 minutes to play.
But Logan Ganie iced the win on an empty netter with 1:16 to play, giving the Saints the 3-1 win.
Matt Davis stopped 24 of 25 shots for his 25th win on the season, as the Saints moved to only a point behind the Pontiacs in the north division standings.
Even with two wins against Grande Prairie and Fort McMurray this weekend, the Saints would still need the Yaks to lose to either Whitecourt or Lloydminster to make a move in the standings.
Next up is the Storm on Friday night – puck drop from Grant Fuhr Arena is at 7 pm, with the pregame show starting on The One at 6:40.
