Weekend split leaves Saints two points back of second place
The Spruce Grove Saints are coming off a weekend split, thanks to a win against Olds on Friday, and a shootout loss to the Sherwood park Crusaders on Saturday night.
Friday, the Saints cruised to a 6-1 victory, with two goals off the stick of Parker Saretsky, and the first career goal from Bruce MacGregor.
Liam McCloskey made just 12 saves to pick up the win, while the Saints hammered Jay Thomson with 49 shots on the Olds goal.
Saturday night, the Saints trailed the game by a goal in the third, before MacGregor scored his second goal in as many nights, to send the game to overtime.
After the 3-on-3 portion didn’t produce a result, the game went to a shootout, which saw Carter Savoie and Garrett Clegg score for the Cru.
Cory Babichuk converted for the Saints, but Cam Mitchell was stoned by goaltender Matt Berlin to give Sherwood Park the victory.
This weekend, the Saints have a couple tough south division opponents lined up, with a road trip to Brooks and Drumheller.
But first, a visit from the Whitecourt Wolverines on Wednesday night, in a game that’s been changed back to a 7 pm start.
The two teams met in Whitecourt last Saturday, in a game that saw Jaedon Leslie score the winner in the Wolverines’ 2-1 win.
That loss snapped the Saints’ five game winning streak.
