Saints beat Dragons Friday night, fall to Bandits Saturday

The Spruce Grove Saints split their weekend series with a win on Friday night and a loss Saturday night.

The Spruce Grove Saints split their weekend series with a win on Friday night and a loss Saturday night.

Their first game of the weekend came Friday against the Drumheller Dragons. It was a matchup of two of the best offenses in the AJHL, as Drumheller had the second most goals in the league up to that point, while Spruce Grove was fourth. After one period of no scoring, the Saints struck like lightning, as Adam Hall, Brayden Nicholetts and Brent Trentham scored all in the span of one minute and one second. Loeden Schaufler would add a goal in the 3rd as insurance to seal the win for the Saints 4-2. Matthew Davis made 31 saves in the game for his 11th win of the year.

Saturday night however, would be a different story. The Saints traveled southeast to face off against the undefeated reigning champion Brooks Bandits. In the rematch of last year's championship series, the Saints and Bandits were tied after the first after goals from Sean Chisholm for Brooks and Seth Fyten for Spruce Grove. However, the Saints dominated the second period, outshooting the Saints 20-3 and scoring twice. They would add another in the third, and Spruce Grove would score as well, but the Bandits took the game 4-2. They outshot the Saints 39-13 and improved their record to an incredible 16-0-0.

With the win and loss, Spruce Grove now sits at 14-3-0 on the season. They take on Lloydminster tomorrow night.
