Spruce Grove comes home trailing series 2-0
The Spruce Grove Saints are back home for Game 3 of the North Final on Monday night, and are trailing a series for the first time in this year's postseason.
Friday night, Spruce Grove led 1-0 on a goal from Seth Fyten just over a minute into the first.
After Jacob Franczak tied it for the Crusaders, Ryan Peckford one-timed it home past Matt Berlin, in his first playoff game for the Saints after being injured before the end of the regular season.
A powerplay blast from Carter Savoie tied the game in the second, before defenceman Reid Irwin scored the go-ahead goal three quarters of the way through the final frame.
An empty netter from Nick Bowman sealed the 4-2 win in Game 1.
In Game 2, a scoreless first period preceded a goal from the Crusaders's Arjun Atwal, just 34 seconds into the second period.
Two goals from the Saints' Parker Saretsky sandwiched a Crusader tally from Brett Wieschorster, to send the game tied at 2 into the third period for the second straight night.
Despite back and forth action that featured Spruce Grove outshooting their opponents 39-12 in regulation, the game moved to overtime following the scoreless third.
In OT, the Saints powerplay was unable to convert after Michael Benning took a kneeing call in the first minute.
After bobbling the puck in neutral ice, the Saints bench was then called for Too Many Men.
Atwal stepped into a one-timer from the right circle for his second of the night, giving his team a 3-2 win.
Up next, the series shifts back to Spruce Grove for Games 3 and 4.
Puck drop on Monday and Tuesday is set for 7 pm.
