Stony Plain in midst of public art revamp

Rotary Park totem pole coming down

A longtime feature of Rotary Park is being dismantled.

Stony Plain is taking down the totem pole, as it's becoming decayed after 25 years.

The pole's carver Rod Pederson says he'd originally expected the white spruce log to last about 15 years.

Pederson donated it back to the Town, after it helped pay buy and ship the log in back in the early 90's.

Instead, a new sculpture has been commissioned for Heritage Park, with the unveiling planned for next year.

It's 16-feet tall, and currently being forged by a blacksmith in Cranbrook, BC.

The Town says it's also working through mural reinstallations at Stony Plain Community Centre, Rotary Park, and Meridian Mall.
