RCMP Constable Dorian Tooze will make his first court appearance on May 1.
A local RCMP officer has been charged following an investigation.
Constable Dorian Tooze of the Stony Plain detachment faces one charge of assault after an incident in late 2018.
RCMP say on October 24, police were in pursuit of a stolen work vehicle when they successfully deployed a tire deflation device. Shortly after, the driver lost control of the vehicle while attempting a turn.
The driver then exited the vehicle and was handcuffed and taken into custody. While restraining the driver, it is alleged that Constable Tooze used excessive force.
Fraser Logan of the RCMP says Tooze will continue working at the detachment with pay. He says Detachment Commander Mike Lokken saw no issue with allowing the constable to commence with his regular duties.
He will make his first court appearance in Stony Plain provincial court on May 1.
