St. Albert RCMP are warning the public about Distraction thefts in the area.

Distraction thieves often target seniors, people they see as vulnerable, and women shopping alone in parking lots, grocery stores and other high activity areas. They often drive high-end vehicles, either registered to themselves with Ontario license plates or newer model rental vehicles

Suspects often use techniques such as selling fake gold, selling fake jewelry claiming that they need the money to pay for a funeral, and subtly stealing jewelry from drivers as they get up close to vehicles in parking lots to ask where the nearest hospital is, among other tactics.

Another very common form of theft they use is to stand very close behind people at checkout and get a glimpse of their credit cards. They then swipe the card and max it out later by making numerous purchases.

Anyone who believes they have been a victim of a scam is urged to call St. Albert RCMP, or their local detachment.
