2018 Most Dangerous Places Built Using Crime Statistics
The City of Spruce Grove and the Town of Stony Plain are both appearing in the Top 100 of the 2018 list for "Canada's Most Dangerous Places" put out by Maclean's magazine.
Each year, the magazine ranks communities with a Crime Severity Index (CSI) which is a Statistics Canada procedure of measuring all crime reported to the police, weighing both the amount and seriousness of the offences. The most current data used in the Maclean's list is from 2016 and was released by Stats Can in July of last year.
Spruce Groves places higher on the list, at 29th overall, with a CSI of 121 while Stony Plain is further down at 91st due to a CSI of 74. When it comes to only violent crimes, Spruce Grove ranks 46th in all of Canada while Stony Plain is at 132nd.
