Scammers victimize Spruce Grove woman

Threats come from scammers pretending to represent CRA

Spruce Grove RCMP are warning people of a tax scam.

Police say taxpayers across the country have received phone calls and emails from scammers impersonating Canadian Revenue Agency employees.

They say a local resident recently fell victim to the scam, reminding people of how common it is. The scammer claimed they worked for the CRA and the woman owed taxes that could be paid in the form of iTunes cards.

RCMP say scammers typically threaten people with arrest, legal action, or deportation if their demands are not met. They state that no legitimate government organization will demand payment in gift or prepaid credit cards and these tactics are used by criminals in order to hide their activities from police.

If you have any information on these crimes, you are asked to contact RCMP. You can contact Crime Stoppers if you wish to remain anonymous.
