Parkland RCMP says the intersection has seen a significant number of incidents.
Alberta Transportation is taking a closer look at a Parkland County intersection that’s seen quite a number of incidents in the past few years.
That’s the intersection at Highway 16A and Range Road 20, which saw its most recent collision on June 11. Two people were injured in that collision between an SUV and a pickup truck, making it 38 injuries at that intersection since 2010.
Parkland RCMP reports a total of 53 collisions in that same spot in the past nine years, with 40 since 2016. One of those collisions resulted in a death in 2011.
Despite the sudden increase in incidents in recent years, Alberta Transportation says no changes have been made to the intersection aside from the introduction of “important intersection ahead” signs.
Alberta Transportation says following a province-wide study of intersections in late-2018, it has decided to take a closer look at the spot in Parkland County. In the past month, cameras have been recording vehicle activity, with the aim to identify potential areas of improvement for traffic and infrastructure.
Alberta Transportation says the data gathered may then be considered in future project funding plans. It says there are many projects across the highway network, and all must be given due consideration.
