During the holiday season, the number of cyber crimes increases, and with the season fast approaching, Alberta RCMP are informing residents how to stay safe online.

Cyber criminals often use fake websites and scams aimed at online shoppers in order to steal credit card and personal information. Police have given tips to the public about procedures to avoid being scammed. Shoppers are advised to refrain from shopping on public Wi-Fi or non-secure websites, update passwords to be unique and secure, and to be cautious when accessing unknown website links or attachments.

It is also recommended to frequently check credit card statements and bank balances after making a purchase, and if you have kids, to monitor what websites they have visited.

Anyone who finds themselves a victim of fraud must contact their bank, and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre online.
