Japanese earthquakes hit close to home

Stony Plain's twin town affected

Stony Plain's twin town of Shikaoi, Japan had a big scare last week.

Thursday morning, two major earthquakes hit their island of Hokkaido, with the hardest hit areas about two and a half hours away from town.

Stony Plain's Mayor William Choy released a statement, offering condolences to the family and friends of those lost.

As of last night, the death count had risen to 39 across the country, with a couple people still reported missing, and more than 600 injured.

Shikaoi officials said they originally lost power after the earthquake, and had to temporarily close schools because of it.

Fortunately, water and gas services were not affected.

Shockwaves from the initial earthquakes led to magnitude 4 quakess in Shikaoi.
