Final approval passes on Stony Plain utility rates

Fully variable billing coming in 2019

It's official - Stony Plain's water and sewer rates are changing in the new year.

At its last meeting, council passed an updated Utility Bylaw that switches water and sewer services over to a variable rate, starting January 1st.

The current system charged customers a monthly fixed fee, along with a variable charge based on usage.

The Town says the switch to one variable rate will not increase bills for 80% of the its customers.

It also says this isn't a cash grab - the new rate system won't result in any extra revenue coming in.

The new method is a way to promote water conservation - an awareness campaign will also start up with the new rates.
