A new neonatal intensive care unit will be opening in St. Albert with support from the provincial government.
Parents in the Sturgeon County area will now be able to receive care closer to home.
The Albertan government has announced a $2.3 million investment into the Sturgeon Community Hospital which will create an open NICU pod with four beds, two private NICU beds, a secure medication room and nursing station and a large family washroom. Fund from the government is coming from the Infrastructure Maintenance Program.
The new unit will operate under the Stollery Children's Hospital and will be equipped with an additional $2.5 million in donations through the Stollery Foundation.
The funding will help as demand continues to grow at Sturgeon Community Hospital, which is expected to surpass 3,000 deliveries this year. Currently babies who require more care are being sent to hospitals in Edmonton.
The new NICU is set to open by mid-2019.
