With winter weather impacting vehicles, Alberta RCMP is warning the public to be cautious about leaving idling vehicles unoccupied.

Police estimate that close to 33% of vehicle thefts come when the car is running with no one in it. In winter time, the number of car thefts increases, so residents are asked to make sure their vehicles are secured.

it is recommended that drivers not leave valuables or keys in the car, as well as dogs or children. Steering wheel locks and remote starters are recommended tools to help prevent break ins.

Anyone who has been a victim of car theft is asked to call their local RCMP detachment.
