Alberta consumers will be protected thanks to new rules on selling and fixing cars

The regulations will take into effect on Halloween.

Protecting the consumer was the main goal according to Service Minister Brian Malkinson after the government announced new rules and regulations surrounding vehicle purchases.

Starting on Wednesday sellers will have to give buyers the complete history of a vehicle, this includes major damage from accidents.

In addition to the new regulations, auto shops will also have to provide written estimates when asked and must receive consumer consent before working on a vehicle.

According to Malkinson this is crucial for vehicle owners on if they pay the fix or rather just sell their car.

Also next week, the Alberta Motor Vehicle Industry Council which is the industry regulator, becomes a public agency to augment it's oversight and enforcement powers.
